EZDD_Inquiry > Search Selected Database

When the option has been chosen to Search Selected database, the main Search Screen will be presented to the user, where some of the most frequently used features of EZ Data Dictionary® are initiated. This screen displays basic metadata about the structure of the selected source database and provides options for additional screens of more detailed information. From this screen the user can access all the metadata about a database, including the database structure, descriptive information about that structure, and with appropriate permission levels, even preview data from the selected database. From this screen the user can also search the metadata for table names, field names or particular descriptive information.

Main Search Screen

The Main Search Screen is divided into three vertical panels. The left and right panels display information about the structure of the database, with some buttons offering additional options, while the center panel offers options for searching into the database metadata for particular information.

The left panel lists the tables that are in the structure of the selected database. When one of these tables is clicked, the right panel shows information about this table.

The right panel displays the table description and record count at the top of the panel, and below that, the columns in the table structure. For each column, the order it appears in the table structure is indicated as well as a "Y" to indicate when that column is a table key. Each of the grid labels can be clicked to reorder the columns according to that parameter.

The buttons on this right panel offer further options to drill down and get more detailed information about the columns and table structure.

To learn more about a particular column, click on the COLUMN_NAME and a new screen will appear containing Column Details and offering some options for interacting with that data. (See Column Details for more information).

To learn about any relationships this table has with other tables in the database, click on the Relationships button. The relationships will display in the bottom of the right panel and can be reordered by clicking on any grid label. Clicking on a relationship name takes the user to a new screen displaying detailed information about that relationship. (See Relationships for more information).

To learn about the indexes for a table, click on the Indexes button, and the indexes display in the bottom of the right panel. The indexes can be reordered by clicking on any of the grid labels. (See Indexes for more information).

To learn more about the table itself, click on Table Details, and a new screen appears showing detailed metadata about this table. Some of this metadata can be edited from that screen, and a capability exists to display and edit details about the columns in this table. This screen also provides the potential to preview some of the data in this table if the user provides appropriate permissions. (See Table Details for more information).

At any point the Columns button can be clicked and the right panel will revert to displaying the columns for the selected table.

The middle panel provides additional powerful options for searching into the selected database, looking for something in the metadata about the database structure or the descriptive information. (See Search a Database for more information).

The left panel also offers a button for All Table Details, which will display a chart of detailed metadata for all the tables in this selected database. The user can edit this metadata from that screen.(See All Tables Details for more information).

Column Details

To learn more about a particular column, click on the Column Name and a new screen will appear containing Column Details. This screen will display the descriptive metadata for this column and offer the option to enter and edit this information. Changes to the metadata can be saved into the EZDD database with the Update button, and information about the values in this column of data can be displayed with the Preview Data button.

The bottom of the screen shows the connect string for the underlying database, and has places to enter the User Code and Password for this database. If the database has a User Code and Password associated with it, the user must enter these correctly in order to have the Preview Data button work. When the user has the appropriate permissions to view the data in the underlying database, the Preview Data button will bring up a screen showing the first 200 unique values for this column in the database, and the count for the number of times that unique value appears in the data. This data cannot be edited from the EZ Data Dictionary® software.

Relationships

To learn about any relationships this table has with other tables in the database, click on the Relationships button. The relationships are displayed in the bottom of the right panel and can be reordered by clicking on any grid label. Clicking on a relationship name takes the user to a new screen displaying detailed information about that relationship.

The Relationship Details screen will display the tables for the relationship at the top of the screen. The middle of the screen will show suggested SQL to access the data from the underlying database for this relationship. And the bottom of the screen will display the Relationship Description and Relationship Properties, two descriptive fields in the EZDD metadata that can be entered and edited by the user. The Update button will update the metadata in the EZDD Database with any changes made on this screen.

Indexes

To learn about the indexes for a table, click on the Indexes button, and the indexes display in the bottom of the right panel, as shown below. The indexes can be reordered by clicking on any of the grid labels.

Table Details

To learn more about the table itself, click on Table Details, and a new screen appears showing detailed metadata about this table. Some of this metadata can be edited from that screen, and a capability exists to display and edit details about the columns in this table. This screen also provides the potential to preview some of the data in this table if the user provides appropriate permissions.

The bottom of the screen shows the connect string for the underlying database, and has places to enter the User Code and Password for this database. If the database has a User Code and Password associated with it, the user must enter these correctly in order to have the Display First 200 Records button work. When the user has the appropriate permissions to view the data in the underlying database, the Display First 200 Records button will bring up a screen showing the first 200 records in this table. If there are fewer than 200 records in the table, all the records will display. This data cannot be edited from the EZ Data Dictionary® software.

The Table Report button will display a formatted report for this table that can be saved or printed.

The All Columns Details button will display a screen showing the descriptive metadata for all the columns in this table. This information can be entered and edited from this screen, and will be updated in the EZDD database with the Update button. The Copy button will copy the information on the screen to the clipboard.

All Tables Details

From the Search screen, the All Table Details choice will bring up a screen showing the descriptive information for all the tables in the underlying database. The user can enter and edit this information from that screen and it can be updated in the EZDD Database with the Update button.

Search a Database

The middle panel of the Search screen gives a range of ability to search into the underlying database for a particular string of characters. The user enters the desired characters in the "Search For" space, can choose to within the various elements listed under Search In, and to search for the desired characters as within that element or for elements starting with those characters. Clicking on Search will perform the search, and results will be displayed in the right panel. A table will be displayed with the Table_Name and Column_Name of the results. Clicking on either grid heading will reorder the results accordingly.
