Two modules are included in EZ Data Dictionary®: EZDD_Admin and EZDD_Inquiry. EZDD_Admin provides administrative function such as adding or deleting source databases, creating and updating metadata about the databases, or performing advanced functions such as mapping interfaces for databases. An installation typically designates someone to administer the system, which is accomplished using this module. In contrast, EZDD_Inquiry provides customized access levels to individual users which includes the ability to generate reports, view database structure and details, and modify descriptive data.
The EZDD_Admin module is used to administer the EZ Data Dictionary® Database with functions to add, describe, update and delete databases and their metadata and to define, maintain and manipulate table interface and upgrade functions. This module is generally used by a small group or a single person with administrative responsibilities.
The EZDD_Admin function provides the ability to add a database and its metadata to the EZDD database, to update the metadata, maintain the reference information about a database, delete a database, modify the configuration file specifying the location of the EZDD database, maintain the interface tables for the EZETL applications and to build SQL to transfer data from one database to another (useful especially for upgrades etc).
The EZDD_Inquiry module provides inquiry access to the wide range of metadata available for a source database. This module can offer the ability to access, search and describe this data, depending on the level of access available to an individual user. The user can drill down into the database details, and the the appropriate permission level, even access the data in the source database to create reports suitable for printing. This module can be used by anyone and is generally of great value to the business user as well as the business analyst, data steward and data analyst.
The EZDD_Inquiry function provides a broad ability to view the metadata for a database, to add, view and modify descriptive information about the database, and to preview the data in the database when appropriate permissions are in place. This function includes the ability to view the table and column structure for a database, search for a particular item or character string in the database structure or descriptive information, view the indexes, relationships and details for any table in the database, and to modify and update the descriptive information about a column, table or relationship in a database.
